Exhibits
at the Bedfordshire Steam
& Country Fayre 2006 at Old Warden Park;
A 3-day event celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the Bedford Steam Engine Preservation Society.
2006 is quite a year for celebration and commemoration as it is the centenary of Dan Albone's death, and of the bringing of clean mains water to Biggleswade and also the 50th anniversary of the first Berkeley car out of the factory in Hitchin Street. The History Society exhibition at the Steam Fair, 15th, 16th & 17th September displayed boards depicting Dan Albone’s life, his cycles and tractor inventions; Berkeley caravans and cars; Maythorn Coachworks and the story of how fresh water was brought to Biggleswade. Our displays attracted much interest from people from all parts of the country especially as we were sited in the area “Made in Bedfordshire.” John Moffitt brought the Ivel Tractor and the Ivel Ladies Cycle from the Shuttleworth collection was joined on Saturday by two other Dan Albone bicycles owned by local people. Outside the marquee were a total of 31Berkeley cars brought by their owners, all members of the Berkeley Enthusiasts Club (BEC). One member, Jamie Pfeifer, came over from the USA and drove around the ring with Ian Mantle; one present and one ex Berkeley race and rally driver in one of Daren Jeff's cars at the same time. Society members involved during the 3 days were Mike Strange, Jean Strange, John Tolson, Rex Skinner, Tony Keech, Ken Page and Thelma Rogers. |
